Bengaluru: An unidentified person posing as a police officer extorted around 1.5 lakh from a couple after threatening to plant cannabis in their house and fixing them in a drug case in HSR Layout.

According to the complaint filed at the jurisdictional police station, the incident had taken place around 9:30 pm on December 17.

The victim, Sanjeev Kumar, said that the accused introduced himself to be a police officer and barged into his house claiming that several drug peddling complaints have been registered against him.

The accused took out several packets of ganja and allegedly placed them on the table demanding money from the victim.

The fake cop also threatened the house owner that if he raised an alarm, he would call the media.

Out of fear, Sanjeev Kumar and his wife paid him Rs 60,000 through Google Pay. Then, the fake policeman took them to a nearby ATM in their own car and forced them to withdraw money.

He took Rs 1.5 lakh and got off the car midway and escaped, the victim told the police.

Residents around HSR Layout alleged that this is not an isolated incident and many such residents have suffered such extortion earlier.

They further said that despite raising complaints regarding such incidents, no action has been taken by the policemen.

Meanwhile the police said that a probe has been launched and CCTV are being analysed to identify and nab the accused.
