Bengaluru: A construction worker died while another was rescued after the earth caved in on them at a construction site at Gurappanapalya in Suddaguntepalya police limits in the city on Monday afternoon.
As both workers were rushed to the St John’s hospital, one of them was declared "brought dead" by the doctors.
The deceased construction worker was identified as Ranjan, 20, who hailed from Sompur in Bihar.
According to the sources, personnel from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Fire and Emergency Services and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were involved in the rescue effort.
A JCB machine was being used for digging and around five workers were present at the site at the time of the incident, the sources added.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, South-East, CK Baba visited the spot and inspected it. He said that the incident took place when the foundation for a building was being dug during which one of the excavators touched the wall of an adjacent apartment complex, leading to the wall and earth caving in on the two workers.
"One worker lost his life due to the cave-in and an FIR has been registered. Action will be taken against the contractor and the owner if they were found violating safety measures. We will check what safety measures were taken at the site. The adjacent apartment building also seems unsafe now," he said.
