BBMP workers rush in to clear 8 tons of trash

Bengaluru: As Bengalureans celebrated ahead of the New Year bursting crackers and dancing in joy on the streets, there was one group of dedicated workers who sacrificed their sleep not to celebrate but to make sure the streets were clean enough after all the revelry.

And they were the BBMP's pourakarmikas, who dutifuly cleared a staggering 8 metric tons of waste after the crowds had disappeared and the city had gone to sleep.

The civic workers, as dutiful as ever, then launched a three-hour clearance drive, across the hotspots of the celebration from 3.30 am to 6.30 am with around 80 of them clearing plastic covers and cups, slippers and bottles discarded on the roads.

There were also New Year lights, goggles, headbands, and horns waiting for them. Remarkably, they cleared the entire area by sunrise, ensuring cleanliness after the festivities.

A BBMP official said that that though dustbins were strategically placed on the roads for public convenience, the majority of the garbage collected was found outside these bins!
