Bengaluru: The city witnessed scenes of ecstatic celebration on the night of December 31, 2023, with thousands of people gathering to celebrate the new year at Church Street, Brigade Road and MG Road.

Post the celebration the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) confirmed that they cleared a massive 8 metric tons of waste in these streets after the parties came to a rent.

A three-hour clearance drive, across these hotspots of celebrations, took place from 3.30 am to 6.30 am, as around 80 civic workers, led by three supervisors took the initiative in clearing articles like plastic covers and cups, slippers, and bottles discarded on the roads and footpaths.

The aftermath of New Year's celebrations left streets strewn with litter, including discarded plastic covers, cups, slippers, and bottles.

The festive spirit translated into a surge in sales and subsequent abandonment of New Year lights, goggles, headbands, and horns on the roads.

Despite efforts by the police to control alcohol consumption on the streets, many opted for alternative beverages in aluminium tins and plastic cups, contributing to a substantial garbage heap for civic workers to address.

Remarkably, the civic authorities efficiently cleared the entire area by sunrise, ensuring a swift restoration of cleanliness after the festivities that extended until 2:00 am.

The scene underscores the need for responsible celebration and waste disposal practices.

A BBMP official expressed the belief that the crowd was well-informed, and dustbins were strategically placed on the roads for convenience. Despite this, the majority of the garbage collected was found outside these bins.

The official emphasised that collecting the waste was crucial to prevent potential disruptions in vehicle movement on Monday, highlighting the necessity of responsible waste disposal even in areas equipped with designated bins.

Two tons of dry waste were collected and sent to the collection centre. Discarded items were also found along the Kasturbha Road, Residency and St. Marks Road.

New Year’s on Monday was celebrated fervently, as people looked forward to a good year.
