BMTC shifts gears: Paving way for e-buses amid soaring fuel costs
NT Correspondent
Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is contemplating a shift away from Vayu Vajra (Volvo) AC buses due to the escalating prices of petrol and diesel.
Rising fuel costs have posed a significant management challenge for BMTC, particularly impacting the maintenance of Volvo buses.
Despite initial expectations of higher profits, the revenue generated by these buses fell short, resulting in increased losses.
To mitigate this, BMTC has opted to gradually decrease the deployment of Volvo buses and introduce electric air-conditioned buses for routes to Kempegowda International Airport.
In March 2020, the fleet of Vajra and Vayu Vajra Volvo buses numbered 767, but it has now dwindled to 342. The decision to embrace electric buses aligns with the existing fleet of 490 electric buses in Bengaluru, with plans to add 821 more to BMTC shortly.
Passengers have shown a positive response to electric buses, which are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective, with operating expenses ranging from Rs 55 to 60 per kilometre compared to Rs 85 for Volvo buses.
BMTC officials anticipate a boost in revenue through the introduction of electric buses, taking inspiration from successful implementations by BMDC and KSRTC, other prominent transport services in the country.
The transition to electric buses aligns with the dual objectives of enhancing financial viability and contributing to environmental conservation.
