Drug peddlers, buyers would be dealt as per Goonda Act: BCP

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Warning drug peddlers and drug consumers of stern action, the city powlice commissioner has said that the accused involved in dealing with narcotic and psychotropic substances will be arrested under preventive detention act.

The Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda along with other senior police officers was addressing public grievances at Masika Janasamparka Diwas organised at Shankar Foundation in Bengaluru's Doddakallasandra on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, the Bengaluru police chief said that it is a matter of great concern that despite knowing the ill-effects of drugs on the body, more and more youths are falling into drug addiction.

"Unfortunately, several countries have legalised the use of a few drugs with reasonsbest to them. The youth who finds misleading information on social media, further gets influenced by the development of new fashion and lifestyle trends of the western culture knowingly or unknowingly," the city top cop said.

In a bid to set an example and also raise awareness against the drug abuse, the Bengaluru Police is set to book charges under Preventive Detention as similar to those in Goonda Act.

The police, following several raids, found and seized huge amounts of drugs including ganja and MDMA across Bengaluru.

The accused getting arrested in drug related cases are mostly between 20 and 30 years of age in the city, he said.

Apart from invoking the Goonda Act against such people and externing repeated offenders, the police was contemplating seizing property acquired through illegal means.
