Sanitation woes, litter and parking hassles jeopardise safety of residents in Jayanagar

Bengaluru: Ward number 153, nestled in the vibrant Jayanagar locality of Bengaluru, is a blend of a residential scene with bustling commercial establishments, and educational institutions.
However, beneath this, the ward grapples with several issues that have left its residents and authorities concerned.
One of the primary grievances voiced by the inhabitants revolves around the sanitation situation.
Residents have been consistently raising concerns about overflowing garbage bins and inadequate waste management, attributing the issue to the inefficiencies of sanitation workers.
This persistent problem not only mars the aesthetic appeal of the ward but also poses serious hygiene challenges for the community.
A resident has alleged that due to the growing number of commercial establishments in the area, the volume of garbage in the area surpasses that of other regions.
This surge is attributed to the higher footfall resulting from increased visitor numbers.
Another resident said, “The overflowing garbage bins and poor waste management are not just the issue. Because of the shopping areas and the food stalls, most people have no regard for the area and just throw bags, spoons and cups on the street side that sometimes even clog drains and accumulate in corners of the streets.”
The lack of parking spaces has emerged as a pressing concern in the area. The surge in the number of vehicles, both residents and visitors alike, has strained the existing parking infrastructure, leading to inconveniences and disputes.
A major issue is that many cars don't follow the noparking rules, and they often park where they're not allowed. The traffic police in the area are frustrated because they always have to remind people about the rules and make sure they are followed.
A pedestrian shared, “Navigating the area has become quite a challenge to walk past all the parked vehicles literally everywhere. The streets are congested with more cars from both locals and visitors, making it harder to find a good place to walk.”
She further added, “The whole situation makes getting around on foot less pleasant and safe.”
Illegal parking is rampant in Jayanagar, extending to roads and sidewalks despite designated pay-andpark areas near shopping zones.
This widespread disregard for designated parking spaces contributes to traffic congestion, jeopardising pedestrian safety.
The evolving landscape of the area is marked by the influx of commercial establishments into residential areas which has sparked mixed reactions among the populace.
While some residents welcome the economic development, others express apprehensions about the associated challenges, particularly in terms of noise pollution and safety concerns.
One person complained, “There's a shop right outside my home on the sidewalk. It's a privacy problem, and it's really hard for me to get my car out, especially on weekends.”
A notable social concern in the ward pertains to the safety of its residents, especially women. Instances of theft and harassment have been reported, fostering a sense of insecurity among the community.
The bustling shopping area of Jayanagar 4th Block, attracting a significant crowd, has witnessed a surge in footfalls, inadvertently leading to increased incidents of street harassment.
While no formal complaints or cases have been filed, female shopkeepers reveal discreet conversations with women shopping alone who recount their uncomfortable experiences.
