Bengaluru: The Bengaluru Police Department has asked policemen to carry government-issued service revolvers while patrolling especially in secluded places in the night.
An order was issued instructing the Assistant-SubInspector (ASI) of Police of the Hoysala team to carry the service weapon while on duty.
It was learnt that there were repeated instructions given, but none of them took it seriously. The orders were passed in the wake of recent armed robbery incidents in Bengaluru.
The Hoysala beat police are the first to visit any crime scene during the night. In such cases, there are high chances of a confrontation with armed assailants who would not hesitate to attack the cops.
Carrying a service revolver would help the night beat personnel to act against such elements and nab them. In the recent case of armed robbery at Lakshmi Bankers and Jewellers in Kodigehalli, the Hoysala police were the first to reach the spot.
The accused were armed and had fired four rounds of fire at the shop owner and his nephew in a bid to rob the shop.
Considering such cases, the police department, in a bid to strengthen vigilance, has made it mandatory for the night beat police to carry the service revolvers along with them.
