Bengaluru: In a freak incident, a staff at the Begur Police Station sustained a bullet injury after a pistol misfired when a constable was collecting firearms as per the order of the Bengaluru Police Commissioner in the city.

The injured personnel was identified as Ambudas, a writer at the Begur Police Station.

As the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has come into effect, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda had recently asked the licensed arms holders to deposit their weapons at the respective police stations with immediate effect until the elections get over.

The incident took place when constable Venkanna was checking a countrymade pistol submitted by a resident identified as Mukunda Reddy.

According to sources, the constable removed the magazine from the pistol and pulled the trigger which opened fire.

The bullet hit Ambudas on his left leg. Ambudas was sitting right opposite to Venkanna, sources added. Shocked, the officers at the station rushed Ambudas to a nearby hospital for treatment.

It is said that he is currently out of danger. A team of Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) experts visited Begur Police Station to learn about the misfire.

A probe is on after which a detailed report is to be submitted to the higher officials.

It is so far learnt that when Venkanna was checking the pistol, he failed to realise that a bullet had remained in the chamber even after removing the magazine.

A very few pistols have a magazine safety that would prevent firing with the magazine removed.
