Bengaluru: A couple were arrested for allegedly attempting to murder their aunt in a bid to steal valuables that she possessed at her house in RMC Yard Police Station limits here.

The arrested accused were identified as Sumithra and her husband Muniraju.

It was learnt that the victim, Annaiamma, 56, had no children but had adopted Sumithra and raised her as her own daughter and married her off to Muniraju a few years ago.

According to police, the incident took place around 9:30 pm on March 18 when Sumithra sought Annaiamma's help to recover her pending payment from her employer and asked Annaiamma to visit her office near RMC Yard.

However upon reaching the spot, Sumitra abandoned Annaiamma at an isolated place and returned home.

Meanwhile an unidentified person launched an attack on Annaiamma with a dagger, which luckily Annaiamma dodged and survived with minor injuries.

As passers-by rushed to her help, the assailant escaped from the place.

An injured Annaiamma returned to her home but was shocked to find that her jewellery, cash and other valuables were missing following which she filed a complaint with the jurisdictional police.

The drama unfolded after the police tracked and nabbed Sumithra and her husband Muniraju.

The police said that Sumithra and Muniraju had an eye on the valuables that Annaiamma possessed. The couple plotted to kill the woman and steal all her valuables.

Following the arrest, the police recovered valuables including jewellery worth 8.7 lakh, 130 grams of silver ornaments and 4.12 lakh in cash along with the dagger used by Muniraju to attack Annaiamma.
