Exposure to heatwave makes Pourakarmikas vulnerable
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: The ongoing heatwave The All India Central Council of Trade Union of Karnataka has highlighted the challenges faced by Pourakarmikas, predominantly Dalit workers who are often engaged in strenuous outdoor work.
Despite soaring temperatures, these workers, who typically operate from 6:30 am to 2:30 pm, continue to toil without proper breaks or facilities.
Many are denied national and festival holidays and lack access to restrooms and clean drinking water, exacerbating their vulnerability to heatrelated health issues.
The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority has issued guidelines for public safety during extreme heat, advising people to stay indoors between noon and 3 pm, stay hydrated, and wear light-coloured cotton clothing and protective gear.
