Women outnumber men but Mysuru- Kodagu has chosen only one woman MP

Mysuru: Though women voters outnumber men in Mysuru- Kodagu parliamentary constituency, voters of the constituency have elected only one woman candidate till now.

Since 1951, Mysuru constituency, which was a dual constituency till 1962, has witnessed seventeen Lok Sabha polls.

Voters have elected only Chandraprabha Urs, the daughter of former CM Devaraj Urs during the 1991 polls. She had defeated then scion of the Mysuru royal family Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar, the sitting MP who had switched sides to the BJP.

Many women candidates, who had contested in the elections, have lost their deposit.

According to the final voters list released by the Mysuru District Administration , the district boasts of 20,72,337 voters, with 10,55,035 being women, 10,17,120 men and182, third gender voters.

The leading political parties, Congress, JD(S) and BJP have failed to field women in Mysuru- Kodagu parliamentary constituency.

Most of the women who contested were from other political parties while some were independents.

V Asharani who contested on UPJP party ticket during the 2019 parliamentary polls secured 4259 votes, SUCI( Communist) Party candidate P S Sandya (1473 votes), Independent candidate N K Kaveriayamma( 1046 votes while the others lost their deposit.

During the 2014 polls, AAP candidate M V Padma secured 5650 votes while KAP candidate Rathi Poovaiah secured 3726 votes.

In the 2009 polls, RDMP candidate Dr Ekeshamma got 3830 votes while PPOI party candidate M Leelavathi got 2300 votes.

Women outnumber men in all eight assembly segments of the constituency.

Krishnaraja has 1,33,168 women voters against 1,24,419 men voters , Chamaraja 1,29,996 women voters against 1,24,897 men voters, Narasimharaja has 159,043 women voters against 147 505 men, Chamundeshwari has 174,196 women voters against 1,71,090 men, Periyapatna has 98764 women voters against 98,447 men voters Hunsur has 124284 women voters against 124208 men voters in Mysuru district.

Madikeri has 1,21,394 women voters against 115159 men voters and Virajpet in Kodagu district has 1,16,266 women voters against 1,13, 319 men voters.
