Bengaluru: Madanayakanahalli police in Bengaluru have apprehended a father and son duo accused of pilfering 1.25 kg of diamonds and gold jewellery, valued at Rs 1 crore, from an elderly care facility.

Mirza Syed Baig, a 19-year-old from Kampli, Ballari, and his father, Mirza Dada Nooruddin Baig, were taken into custody following a complaint lodged by Kamala of Kadabagare.

The police recovered 1.25 kg of gold ornaments, 2 kg of silver items, Rs 21.5 lakh in cash, and various religious artifacts.

Kamala, the proprietor of Sandhya Kiran Old Age Home and Rehabilitation Centre, reported the theft. Mirza Syed, employed as a cleaner at the facility for the past three years, carried out the theft on April 9 while Kamala was away visiting her son for the Ugadi festival.

Upon discovering the theft, Kamala's son informed the authorities, which led to the arrest of the suspects.

Mirza Syed, who also worked as a mason, had stashed the stolen goods in his home near the facility.

Driven by financial struggles and his father's medical conditions—recovering from three heart surgeries—Mirza Syed hatched the plan to steal the valuables.

His father, an auto-rickshaw driver, saw the theft as a solution to their financial woes.

Inspector Muralidhar's team intercepted the pair as they tried to escape to Ballari, resulting in their arrest. The police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
