BJP's manifesto conspicuously silent on one major issue—unemployment!

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) manifesto for the current general election stands out not only for its array of pledges and achievements but also for its conspicuous silence on a crucial issue — unemployment.

In contrast to previous promises of creating two crore jobs annually, this year’s manifesto emphasises making India a manufacturing hub.

The document's vagueness on job creation, echoed by the chief economic adviser's assertion that unemployment is beyond the reach of elected governments, likely reflects the complex realities on the ground.

A recent pre-poll survey by CSDS-Lokniti underscored rising discontent among those opposed to re-electing the Narendra Modi government, primarily due to economic concerns.

Two-thirds of the respondents critical of Modi’s regime cited rising unemployment, inflation, and falling income during his tenure.

This dissatisfaction, though not numerically significant, should have boosted the Opposition's prospects.

However, PM Modi and the BJP seem adept at navigating economic challenges by skillfully intertwining religious and political narratives.

Efforts to consolidate the Hindu identity, including polarising tactics and the construction of the Ram temple, have shielded the regime from potential public backlash over economic woes.

Moreover, Modi's claims of enhancing India's international standing, buoyed by a robust propaganda campaign, have resonated with many.

This underscores the BJP's adeptness at narrative-building, while highlighting the Opposition's failure to decode the BJP's strategies.

The survey also revealed a degree of ambivalence towards opposition tactics, such as the caste census or the revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir.

This ambiguity may further tilt the scales in the BJP's favour. While surveys are not infallible, they offer valuable insights into the political landscape.

Despite uncertainties, the findings suggest a challenging terrain for India’s beleaguered opposition.
