Adugodi's urban challenges: from water scarcity to infrastructure woes

NT Correspondent

Bengaluru: Adugodi, a bustling neighbourhood in Bengaluru under Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Ward 176 in the south of the city a popular residential area, replete with apartment complexes, independent houses, and commercial spaces, offers a blend of urban conveniences and a tight-knit community atmosphere.

Yet, beneath its surface lies a multitude of challenges and concerns that resonate with its residents. Water scarcity stands out as a pressing issue plaguing Adugodi, casting a pall of uncertainty over its residents.

"The erratic water supply has become a recurring nightmare," shared a long-standing resident.

"It's distressing to witness our precious resources being mismanaged and squandered."

The resident also highlighted the water woes are the remnants of illegal borewell drilling activities, as highlighted by Suma Reddy, another resident.

"The unauthorised borewells have disrupted our local water ecosystem," she remarked. "Though the authorities intervened to halt these illicit activities there was no permanent solution to resolve the water scarcity issue, leaving us with uneven water distribution."

Traffic congestion further compounds Adugodi's challenges, echoing the city's notorious reputation for gridlocked roads.

"Getting through the daily traffic jams is tough," said a teacher who travels with her students in a school van every day.

She added, "The constant traffic not only wastes our time but also wears us out, affecting our work and how we feel."

Waste management emerges as another pivotal concern, reflecting Bengaluru's broader struggle with garbage collection and disposal.

The same teacher added, "Overflowing bins and sporadic waste collection destroy the aesthetic appeal of our neighbourhood.”

Talking about individual civic responsibility, she added, “I try to teach my students about waste management and being responsible citizens because I see several residents throwing their garbage wherever they want.”

She further added that this is probably the only issue in the city for which the blame is more on the citizens than the authorities.

Adugodi faces challenges like poor roads, drainage issues, and limited streetlights, making daily life harder for its residents, notes another long-time resident.

"Good infrastructure is vital for a better quality and it is also more about safety,” he added.

He further added that streetlights don't function regularly and they work only occasionally which is a major hazard for both pedestrians and riders, especially women.

Broken pedestrian pathways and inadequate stormwater drains are pressing concerns in Adugodi, exacerbating the daily challenges faced by residents.

A concerned mother of 2 children pointed out, "The broken sidewalks make walking hazardous, especially for children and the elderly. It's a safety issue that needs urgent attention."

Similarly, the inadequate stormwater drainage system poses risks during the monsoon season.

"Poor drainage leads to waterlogging, creating inconvenience and health hazards. It's essential to upgrade the drainage infrastructure to mitigate flooding and safeguard public health."

These infrastructure deficiencies compromise the quality of life and underscore the need for comprehensive urban planning and maintenance.
