156 candidates in fray for 6 Council seats
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: The last date for filing nominations for the six Council seat polls slated for June 3, concluded on Thursday, registering a total of 156 candidates in the fray. As many as 85 candidates filed their nomination on Thursday.
One can withdraw their nomination until May 20. The Council seats that will go to polls include Karnataka North-East Graduates, South-West Graduates, South-East Teachers, SouthWest Teachers, South Teachers and Bangalore Graduates Council.
Teachers and graduates registered as voters in respective constituencies constitute the various electorates.
As many as 83 candidates will contest as independents. The independents include rebel BJP leader and Hindutva ideologue Raghupati Bhat, who will contest from the South-West Graduates seat. Bhat had been the saffron party’s Udupi MLA before being sidelined in favour of Yashpal Suvrana, who won the seat back in May 2023.
Karnataka North-East Graduates will witness 41 contestants. As many as 22 candidates will compete for the South-West Graduates seat.
The South-West Teachers will see 22 candidates competing. The South-East Teachers seat will see 22 contestants. As many as 19 candidates will contest from the Karnataka South Teachers seat. The Bangalore Graduates will have 34 contestants in the fray.
