Pull up your socks, BBMP!!

Bengaluru: The BBMP is always ready to release crores of rupees for developmental works, even those that don’t get taken up, but continues its prolonged apathy towards the children who study at the corporation schools and colleges. Last year, the Palike failed to procure uniforms, shoes and socks for thousands of children due to the pandemic. The tender inviting bidders to supply shoes and socks was floated only on December 21, eight months late for the academic year.

“The BBMP authorities will take one or two months to finalize the bidders. It will be March or April by the time supply of shoes and socks is commenced. I don’t think it will serve the purpose,” said a teacher working at BBMP High School. Hanumanthaiah, a Senior Education Officer with BBMP admits that the tender process was delayed by the pandemic. “We hope to complete the distribution of socks and shoes before the current academic year ends,” he said.

Nagasimha G Rao, Director of Child Rights Trust, says that most of the students hail from economically weaker families and deserve to get their basic supplies on time.
