Bakr Eid celebration on 17th
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Eid Ul Zaha or Bakr Eid will be celebrated on June 17 this year, it has been announced.
The local Karnataka Hilal Committee made the declaration on Friday and the date is consistent with the rest of the country. June 17 falls on a Monday this year.
This means that Friday was the last date of the Dhul Qada, the ninth month of the Hijri calendar. It is a lunar calendar wherein a single revolution of the moon around the earth constitutes a month.
A lunar calendar is 12 days shorter than a solar calendar in which the earth’s revolution around the sun makes up a year. The moon was sighted on Friday and Saturday is the first day of the Dhul Hijjah (the month of pilgrimage), the 12th month of the Islamic calendar.
Eid Ul Zaha is celebrated on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, which falls on June 17 this year in this neck of the woods. The Eid is marked on the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage. The ninth of Dhul Hijjah is the day of Arafah, the last day of the Hajj. In Saudi Arabia, June 15 is the day of Arafah and June 16 will be Eid Day.
Most Gulf nations will follow these dates with the exception of Oman, which will mark Eid on June 17 due to not sighting the moon on Thursday evening.
