Onion prices bring tears to customers' eyes
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Who cut the onions?, is a metaphor tearing up and crying. Emerged from social media, the phrase is mostly used for comedic situations and sometimes tear jerking situations.
However, with the rise in onion prices in Bengaluru, that phrase may need to be understood differently. Amidst the rise in prices of the city’s beloved tomatoes, merchants and customers have reported a marginal increase in prices.
It is reported that due to white-fly outbreak, prices of tomatoes have reached Rs. 80. As a good monsoon is predicted, relief in prices may be short lived.
The price for a kilo of onions is Rs. 55 in KR Market. Tomatoes are sold for Rs. 60 per kg in other places of the city.
Reportedly, the supply of onions has taken a hit, and it also suggests that the price may breach the hundred rupee mark.
To compensate for the destroyed crops during the pre-monsoon showers, reports say that the onions are sourced from Nashik in Neighbouring Maharashtra. This has got customers apprehensive, and has influenced their decisions on purchasing groceries.
