Former mayors advise DKS against holding BBMP polls: Reports

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Several Congress members on Sunday suggested Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar against holding the elections for the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) any time soon.

This comes against the backdrop of the government approving to divide the BBMP into five corporations in a bid for effective administration. However, for mer mayors, deputy mayors have reportedly suggested holding the elections at a later point.

It is learnt that the Lok Sabha drubbing in Bengaluru, in addition to the growth of the BJP-JD(S) alliance are key factors in their advice.

This September will mark four years since an elected council last existed. However, Shivakumar told reporters that a committee led by former mayors will be formed to study issues pertaining to the Palike. Another meeting for the same will be chaired next week.

The previous and current government have faced backlash for stalling the BBMP elections, leaving the city with no elected council.
