Mystery shrouds death of nursing student; parents seek detailed investigation
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: In a suspected suicide case, a nursing student hailing from West Bengal was found dead in her college hostel room here, a police official said on Monday.
The deceased student was identified as Diya Mondal, 20, from Gopalpura village in Kanksa, Bardhaman. According to the police, the incident took place on Saturday night within the limits of the Jalahalli Police Station. She was found hanging from her dupatta inside her hostel room, police said.
Police suspect she ended her life due to a family dispute. However, the exact reason behind her extreme step is yet to be ascertained. It has been revealed that she belonged to a poor family and her father, Debashis Mondal, works as a cook to earn a living.
"Despite our poor earnings, I did my best to get my daughter educated and become self-reliant. I hear a boy used to harass her, but I don’t know the exact reason behind her death," he said.
Diya's mother said she spoke to her daughter around 6 pm on the fateful day. "She seemed normal when I spoke to her. But in the next hour, I got a call from her friend who said that Diya had committed suicide," she said.
The parents have urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for a proper investigation to ascertain the reason for their daughter's death.
Meanwhile, the Jalahalli police shifted the body to a hospital for post-mortem, and are awaiting the report. Further investigation into the matter is on.
