Identify street vending zones soon: BBMP
Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Chief Commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Tushar Girinath has directed officials to speed up the survey of street vending zones in the city.
This comes in the backdrop of criticism that the survey is long overdue, despite the law directing one to be conducted every five years. In its previous enumeration done in 2017, the BBMP reportedly found only 25,000 street vendors with 60 per cent of them possessing licenses to conduct business.
Suralkar Vikas Kishore, Special Commissioner (Welfare) said that the survey for street vending zones should be conducted as per population of the area. He also confirmed that a mobile application is being developed, for surveyors. Appropriate locations will be geo-tagged and further surveyed.
The minimum space identified for sales should be 2.5 per cent, he added. This survey will be then presented to the Town Sales Committee, and after objections, will be made public via the Palike’s website.
