COVID 3RD WAVE: Cases spike across India
Weekend curfew in Delhi; Mumbai tops with 10,860 cases
New Delhi: India recorded 37,379 fresh Covid-19 cases and 124 deaths in the 24 hours ending 9 am Tuesday. With 11,007 recoveries, the active cases in the country stood at 1,71,830. Meanwhile, the Omicron tally has touched 1,892, with the highest number of cases in Maharashtra (568).
Maharashtra on Tuesday detected 75 new Omicron variant cases in the last 24 hours, taking the count of such cases to 653 so far, the state health department said. Of the 75 Omicron cases, 40 cases were reported from Mumbai.
Delhi on Tuesday decided to implement a weekend curfew in the national capital, following a meeting by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority. The seating capacity in the metro and buses was increased to 100 per cent to avoid crowding at stops and stations.
Tamil Nadu on Tuesday recorded 2,731 Coronavirus infections and nine fatalities, taking the count to 27,55,587 and the death to 36,805. On Monday, the state had recorded 1,728 cases. Kerala reported 3,640 new Covid-19 cases and 30 related deaths on Tuesday. The test positivity rate has jumped to 5.11 per cent. The state has an active caseload of 20,180 infections.
The Punjab government has imposed a night curfew in the state from 10 pm to 5 am, excluding essential services. All educational institutes shall remain closed, while online classes will continue. Among other restrictions, bars, cinemas halls, malls, restaurants and spas will be allowed to operate at 50 per cent capacity, subject to staff being fully vaccinated.
West Bengal on Tuesday reported the highest-ever single day spike of 9,073 Covid-19 cases. 16 related deaths were also reported today along with 3,768 recoveries. Gujarat on Tuesday reported 2,265 new Covid cases, 240 recoveries and 2 deaths.
Among the metros, Delhi recorded 5481 cases, Mumbai recorded 10,860 cases, Kolkata recorded 4759 cases and Chennai recorded 1489 cases. - Agencies
