State capacity key to economic growth of country: Prof Karthik

Bengaluru, NT Bureau: Tata Chancellor’s Professor of Economics at the University of California San Diego, Prof. Karthik Muralidharan, delivered a compelling talk at IIM Bangalore on ‘India's State Capacity: Accelerating Growth, Improving Health and More’.

The session, held on Wednesday, was part of the 'Healthcare Economics: Theory and Practice' course, offered as a Term 4 Elective by IIMB's Public Policy faculty, including Prof. Allen P Ugargol and Prof. Arnab Mukherji, Chairperson of the Post Graduate Programme in Public Policy and Management. Highlighting the important role of state capacity in economic growth and effective governance, Prof. Muralidharan drew from examples in the health sector.

His discussion underscored challenges such as asymmetric infor mation among healthcare providers and patients and the policy biases that hinder preventive healthcare efforts.

Prof. Mukherji commended Prof. Muralidharan's book, “Accelerating India’s Development: A State-Led Roadmap for Effective Governance,” for offering actionable strategies to advance development.
