Bengaluru: Accidents involving tipper trucks have been on the rise in the city. In the latest incident, a 24-year-old woman died on the spot when an over-speeding tipper truck rammed into the bike on which she was riding pillion along with her elder brother near Garuda Mall on Tuesday.
The incident took place around 8 am when the victim, identified as Sanjana Priya, and her brother were going on a bike. A tipper truck coming from behind rammed into their bike and they both fell off. Due to the impact, Sanjana died on the spot while her brother sustained grievous injuries and was shifted to a nearby hospital. The truck driver sped away after the incident. Ashok Nagar traffic police have taken up a case against the truck driver and are on a look out for him and his vehicle.
This is the third death, due to a tipper lorry accident in 30 days. Two weeks back, a 42-year-old was hit by a tipper truck near Yeshwanthpur Traffic police limits. On Dec 4, a two-wheeler rider who had stopped at Hosa Road signal was run over by a speeding tipper truck.
According to the Motor Vehicles Department, the main reason for such accidents is rash and negligent driving. City traffic police officials claim that most truck drivers tend to ignore traffic rules and give scant regard to other motorists.
Other reasons are driver fatigue and overloading, which often affects brake efficiency and leads to accidents. With the revival of construction activities in the city, builders are deploying more tipper trucks to transport materials to various parts of the city.
