Jayanagar, Ward 153 faces contrasting challenges

Jayanagar, a vibrant and well-planned neighbourhood in Bengaluru, is renowned for its tree-lined streets, well-maintained parks, temples, and a rich culinary scene that draws both residents and visitors. Despite its modern amenities and traditional charm, Jayanagar, specifically Ward 153, is not without its challenges. These challenges reveal a dichotomy within the ward, with distinct issues affecting its posh and less affluent sides.

A closer look at the issue: On the “posh” side of Ward 153, noise pollution and parking issues are significant concerns. The presence of upscale restaurants, bars/pubs and social gatherings often leads to loud music, vehicular traffic, and construction activities that disturb the peace of the neighbourhood. "It's become increasingly difficult to find a quiet moment, especially during weekends. When I was a kid the place was so peaceful and now it lost its peacefulness,” said a long-term resident. Moreover, the limited parking spaces in this area exacerbate tensions among residents.

This issue is because most buildings and independent houses have designated parking spaces for one four-wheeler, but most families here own two to three vehicles forcing them to park on the road, added a father of a toddler. He added, “I like to take my child on a walk in his tricycle every day, but I am forced to walk on the road because the footpaths are broken and the side of the road is filled with parked cars.” It is so dangerous and I am always in panic mode. On the other hand, the less affluent side of Ward 153 grapples with infrastructure maintenance and waterlogging. Potholes, damaged roads, and inadequate public facilities are common issues that residents face. Waterlogging is another significant issue that affects this part of the ward, particularly during heavy rainfall. Adding to these challenges is the malfunctioning signal at a major junction in Jayanagar, causing frequent traffic snarls. The signal, located at the intersection of Sagar Hospital, has been non-functional for several weeks, leading to confusion and gridlock during peak hours.

The consequences: The consequences of these issues are far-reaching, impacting the daily lives of Jayanagar's residents and the overall appeal of the neighbourhood. Traffic congestion, for instance, is a common challenge across both sides of the ward. As a densely populated area, Jayanagar often faces heavy traffic, especially during peak hours.

This congestion not only increases travel time but also contributes to pollution, affecting the environment and public health. Waste management is another critical concern, particularly in urban settings like Jayanagar. Improper waste disposal, overflowing bins, and delayed garbage collection have led to hygiene issues and unpleasant living conditions in some parts of the ward. The issue of parking, particularly in residential areas, has led to disputes and inconvenience. The malfunctioning signal at the junction of 9th Main and 30th Cross has further exacerbated traffic congestion, leading to frustration among drivers and pedestrians alike.

The lack of a functional traffic signal has resulted in near-misses and a chaotic traffic situation. "This is a key junction, and the signal's failure is causing major disruptions. It needs to be fixed immediately," noted another resident.

Recommendations for improvement: Addressing the contrasting issues within Ward 153 requires a multifaceted approach that takes into account the specific needs of both the posh and less affluent sides.

First and foremost, effective traffic management solutions are essential. Implementing measures such as better traffic signal coordination, promoting public transportation, and creating dedicated parking areas could help alleviate congestion and parking issues. "Managing traffic in Jayanagar is a constant challenge due to the increasing number of vehicles and we are doing our best with waste management with the resources that are available,” said the BBMP Zonal Commissioner adding that the BBMP is doing its duty. In terms of infrastructure, regular maintenance and timely repairs are crucial to improving the living conditions on the less affluent side. "The government should prioritise road repairs and drainage system upgrades to prevent waterlogging," advocated another resident added that these drainage systems are outdated and just don't need to be repaired they need to be fully upgraded.

Additionally, enhancing waste management practices through more frequent garbage collection and community awareness programs can help address hygiene concerns. To mitigate noise pollution, especially in the posh areas, stricter enforcement of noise regulations and promotion of quieter, more sustainable modes of entertainment can make a significant difference, urge residents.
