AI-enabled security system for safety of women healthcare personnel

NT Correspondent, Bengaluru: In a major move to improve the safety of women healthcare personnel across Karnataka, the Minister for Medical Education & Skill Development, Dr Sharan Prakash Patil, chaired a high-level meeting on Friday at Vikasa Soudha to discuss security measures in medical colleges, hospitals, and hostels. This follows an earlier review meeting focused on strengthening current security systems. Dr Patil emphasised that feedback from women healthcare professionals would play a crucial role in shaping the new security protocols.

“Institution heads must actively seek input in writing and take swift, concrete actions to implement necessary safety measures. A security audit committee will be formed at each institution, and monthly reviews of security protocols will be mandatory. Additionally, strict background checks for all security personnel will be conducted. To further ensure safety, 24/7 canteen facilities will be made available, ensuring that women healthcare staff do not need to leave the premises,” Dr Patil stated. Key measures proposed include the introduction of colour-coded ID badges for easy identification, personal security alarms, SOS remotes, and hooters for emergencies. The plan also includes safe transportation options for late shifts, counselling services, and mandatory training in self-defence and crisis response for healthcare personnel.

A central control room, monitored by ex-army personnel, will oversee the new AI-enabled security system, including round-the-clock CCTV surveillance and personal alarm systems. The control room will also operate a 24/7 helpline, providing immediate support in case of emergencies. Plans are underway to install additional CCTV cameras, improve street lighting, and create separate duty rooms and restrooms for male and female staff on medical campuses. Dr Patil underscored that the heads of medical institutions would be held accountable for any security lapses.

To further streamline operations, he directed the medical education department to initiate new tenders for the procurement of drugs, ensuring that all aspects of healthcare are being addressed alongside safety measures. A panel will be formed at the State Secretariat to oversee the implementation of these measures.
