Bengaluru’s second international airport likely at Nelamangala

NT Correspondent Bengaluru: Bengaluru is set to receive official confirmation on the location of its second international airport within days. While several locations, including Dabbaspete, Kanakapura, Magadi, Doddballapura, Vasanthanarasapura, and Nelamangala, were considered, the site near Nelamangala seems to be the most probable choice. The 11th round of meetings regarding the second international airport have taken place. The IDFC organization identified seven potential sites, with the Nelamangala area being favored, according to recent reports. With increasing pressure on the Kempegowda International Airport, the construction of a new international airport is planned for the next decade.

After Delhi and Mumbai, Bengaluru is poised to join the ranks of cities with two international airports. The proposed location near the Nelamangala-Kunigal National Highway has been deemed suitable, with easy access facilitated by the Peripheral and NICE roads. There are also plans to extend the metro route to Nelamangala, enhancing convenience for travelers. The government is expected to finalize this site and submit a proposal to the airport authority soon.

This site meets the necessary criteria, and approval is anticipated. The rule currently restricts the establishment of another international airport within 150 km of an operational one, but this restriction is set to expire by 2035, aligning with the government’s long-term plans for airport development.
