CM dedicates Yelahanka gas-based power plant to state
NT Correspondent Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, alongside Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Energy Minister KJ George, officially dedicated the Yelahanka Combined Cycle Power Plant (YCCPP) to the State, marking a significant advancement in Karnataka's energy infrastructure.
This 370 MW gas-based power plant, the first of its kind in the State, aims to meet the growing energy needs of Bengaluru. Constructed by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL), the plant generates 236.825 MW from a gas turbine and 133.225 MW from a steam turbine, ensuring reliable power supply to the region. During the inauguration, CM Siddaramaiah emphasised the government's commitment to expanding energy capacity, stating, "The previous administration did not establish any new gas plants. With our focused efforts, we are excited to add this vital resource to our energy portfolio." Karnataka has set an ambitious target to increase its installed power capacity from 32,000 MW to 60,000 MW by 2030, crucial for supporting industrial growth and attracting investments. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of energy security for the State's economic development, noting, "A consistent energy source is essential for attracting investments and boosting GDP." Energy Minister KJ George praised the project as a matter of pride for KPCL and the government, celebrating the successful completion of a project initiated by Siddaramaiah in 2016.
"This development showcases our commitment to ensuring reliable power for all," he stated. The Chief Minister announced a one-time bonus of Rs 5,000 for all Yelahanka Power Plant employees, reinforcing the government's support for its energy workforce. The plant, designed with advanced technology to minimise noise pollution, ensures a harmonious coexistence with the local community.
