Bengaluru’s AI cameras to monitor traffic violations

NT Correspondent Bengaluru: Bengaluru is known not only as the Garden City and IT hub but has also gianed notoriety for its persistent traffic woes. Despite several government initiatives, the traffic situation remains dire. In an attempt to curb violations and ease congestion, 90 AI-powered cameras have been installed at key junctions across the city. These AI cameras are capable of detecting 13 different types of traffic violations, including speeding, mobile phone use, seatbelt violations, signal jumping, and more.

Once a violation is detected, a challan is automatically issued, and sent directly to the violator’s mobile phone. Traffic in Bengaluru continues to be a major challenge for the police department. To bolster police efforts, a team of 40 aeronautics students from NITTE Meenakshi Institute of Technology has developed a drone-based software system that provides real-time input to the city’s traffic control room, further assisting in monitoring and management.
