Rain causes tree fall, waterlogging and huge flooding
NT Correspondent Bengaluru: Waterlogging and incidents of trees falling have been reported from some parts of the city, following heavy showers late on Saturday night. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) staffers are actively working to restore normalcy by removing water from spots that are inundated, and cleared 15 trees and 44 branches which have fallen due to gusty winds and heavy rain. According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) sources, the city recorded 10.4 mm of rainfall on Saturday. The south and east regions of the state capital were the most affected, with some roads too submerged in water.
The basement of Kendriya Vihar apartments in Yelahanka was flooded as the water measured up to four feet. This left vehicles, including cars partially submerged. Officials from the BBMP say that a compound wall of the apartment wall collapsed adding that a dedicated team from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the fire force pumped away the excess water. The water level has come down to a foot now. The BBMP also claims that the nearby Rajakaluve which helps water flow to Jakkur lake from Yelahanka lake also adds to problems as the apartment is built 25 feet below the lake, thus causing flooding.
Another seven-foot high compound wall collapsed near the ETA Mall in Binnypet in the west zone, damaging some bikes parked alongside the wall. Rainwater also entered 10 homes in part of Old Vijayanagar, in the south zone. A sanitary line near the rajakaluve burst, resulting in the flooding according to officials. Some roads in Kalyan Nagar, near Electronic City and Bengaluru-Mysuru road among others witnessed inundation, leading to traffic issues.
