Titan of Indian industry Ratan Tata passes away
Agencies Mumbai: Veteran industrialist Ratan Tata died at a Mumbai hospital late on Wednesday night, a top police official told PTI. The chairman emeritus of the Tata group was 86. Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, in a statement, confirmed the death of Tata, and described him as his "friend, mentor and guide". For the past few days, he was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital in south Mumbai. Billionaire Harsh Goenka also tweeted about Tata's demise, calling him a "titan".
Tata had said there was no cause for concern regarding his health and he is undergoing check-ups for age-related medical conditions. He took over as the chairman of Tata Sons in March 1991 and retired on December 28, 2012. During his tenure, the Tata Group's revenues grew manifold, totalling USD 100.09 billion in 2011-12 from a turnover of a mere Rs 10,000 crore in 1991. He returned as interim chairman of the group and handed over the baton of the group to N Chandrasekaran in January 2017 and moved to his role of Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons. Ratan Tata was the son of Naval Tata and graduated from the Cornell University College of Architecture with a bachelor's degree in architecture. He joined Tata in 1961, where he worked on the shop floor .
