Celebrating Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam: A visionary leader and beacon of hope

NT Correspondent Bengaluru: On the birth anniversary of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, we celebrate the life and legacy of a visionary leader who transformed India's scientific and educational landscape. From his pioneering work at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to his tenure as India's 11th President, Kalam’s journey is a testament to his relentless dedication, scientific genius, and deep commitment to empowering the nation.

The Isro years; Dr. Kalam’s career at ISRO began in the 1960s, where he quickly became an instrumental force in shaping India’s space program. His contributions included the development of India's first satellite, Aryabhatta, and the launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). His innovative approach, leadership, and meticulous planning were key to establishing India as a formidable player in global space exploration. Kalam’s vision was not only about technological advancement but also about using space technology for social progress, ensuring that his work had a lasting impact on millions.

A journey of service; In 2002, Dr. Kalam’s exceptional contributions to science and his vision for India’s future earned him the highest office in the country. Becoming the 11th President of India, he shifted his focus towards education, youth empowerment, and sustainable development. Often called the "People's President," Kalam was accessible and approachable, using his position to inspire and motivate millions, particularly the youth, to dream big and work diligently towards achieving their goals. Dr. Kalam’s passion for education and youth development led to the recognition of October 15 (his birthday) as World Students' Day.

He believed that the youth held the key to the nation’s progress and emphasised the importance of education as a tool for empowerment. His message of "Dream, Believe, Achieve" resonated with young people across the globe, motivating them to aspire and work for a brighter future. Even after his presidency, Dr. Kalam continued to be a mentor to students and a champion for education. He emphasised "Education is the only weapon that can change the world” and the transformative power of education, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. His dedication to underprivileged communities was reflected in scholarships and initiatives established in his name.
