Freedom fighters assn celebrate ' Mysore Chalo'
NT Correspondent Mysuru: The Mysore District and City Freedom Fighters Association celebrated the 77th Mysore Chalo anniversary on Thursday. They garlanded the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the Freedom fighters Park and later offered floral tributes to the memorial of Ramaswamy, a freedom fighter, who laid down his live during the Mysore Chalo movement. Speaking on the occasion, senior freedom fighter YC Revanna said the Mysore Chalo movement paved the way for replacing the rule of the Mysore Maharajas with a democratically elected government.
When India gained independence in 1947, the then Maharaja of Mysore declined to install a democratically accountable government. Protesting against this decision of the Maharaja of Mysore, the then leader of Mysore State Congress K C Reddy gave a call for the launch of a satyagraha on September 1, 1947 which was named Mysore Chalo movement.
The freedom fighter urged the Maharaja of Mysore to issue a royal proclamation for formation of a democratically elected government in the erstwhile Mysore state. Bowing to the demands of the protesters, the then Maharaja of Mysore declared the formation of an elected government on October 24, 1947. This day is celebrated to mark the victory of the Mysore Chalo movement
