After spending hundreds of crores on white-topping roads and fixing potholes across the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is set to allocate another ?700 crore to address 400 kilometres of damaged stretches. BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath confirmed this development to mediapersons on Monday. “The action plan is ready, and we have received approval from the State Government. The tendering process will commence on Thursday, and after a 21-day period, work is expected to start in January next year,” Girinath said. The BBMP will fully fund the project over two years. Initially, around ?670 crore was allocated to asphalt damaged stretches.
However, following increased pressure from elected representatives, the budget was raised to ?700 crore. “We will have to adjust for this in the budget for 2025- 26,” Girinath added. The city’s road infrastructure, particularly in its peripheral areas, has been in poor condition for a long time. The BBMP has faced intense criticism for delays in addressing these issues, despite repeated demands from the public. It is understood that the Mahadevapura Zone, home to several IT companies, will receive a significant portion of the funds, with 82 kilometres of bad roads identified for repairs in the area. Funds for repairing 76.85 kilometres of bad stretches in the East Zone will amount to ?95 crore, while the same amount will be allocated for 34.95 kilometres of roads in the South Zone. The Dasarahalli Zone has the smallest allocation, with just ?20 crore earmarked for repairs. The BBMP estimates that work on each kilometre may cost ?2 crore. Key stretches identified for repair include:
The service road of the Outer Ring Road from Silk Board to Iblur
- Marathahalli to Karthik Nagar
- Kadugodi Main Road
- Pattandur Agrahara Road
- The notorious Kerekodi Road
The project aims to address long-standing issues and improve the city’s road infrastructure.
