The Karnataka IT/ITES Employees Union has submitted a formal request to the Labour Commissioner, urging the introduction of a 12-day annual menstrual leave policy for women employees in the IT and IT-enabled services sector. Representing over 10,000 members and the interests of lakhs of IT workers, the union emphasised the critical need for such a policy to address the well-being of women in the workforce.
In a letter addressed to the Labour Commissioner, Suhas Adiga, the General Secretary of Karnataka IT/ITES Employees Union stated that menstrual leave acknowledges the physical challenges women face during their periods, such as severe cramps, fatigue, and hormonal changes. Paid leave allows rest and recovery, boosting overall health without financial loss. Recognising the unique biological needs of women fosters a fair and inclusive workplace. Normalising menstrual discussions reduces stigma and builds a supportive environment, it said.
Flexible leave policies reduce workplace stress and health concerns, encouraging women to remain in high-pressure industries like IT/ITeS, where female attrition rates are often high. Countries such as Spain, Japan, and South Korea, as well as Bihar within India, have adopted menstrual leave policies.
