Over 10,000 join walkathon to support 'Health for All' on World Disability Day

Over 10,000 people participated in the 18th edition of the Bengaluru Walkathon, held on December 14 at Kittur Rani Chennamma Stadium, celebrating World Disability Day. Organised by Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled and supported by OpenText, the event focused on the theme “Health for All.” The Walkathon united diverse groups in advocating for inclusive healthcare and breaking barriers to equitable access. The event emphasised the importance of health as a fundamental right for all, promoting inclusivity and raising awareness about the need for accessible healthcare for marginalised communities.

It highlighted Samarthanam's mission to champion health equity for everyone. The walkathon aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 3, focusing on healthy living and addressing vital issues such as nutrition, menstrual hygiene, and technological accessibility for the visually impaired. It also emphasised improving healthcare infrastructure and ensuring transparent resource distribution to government hospitals and rural clinics. This event served as a platform for health awareness and inclusivity, drawing communities, corporations and volunteers to work towards a shared responsibility for a healthier society.

Participants included C. K. Ramamurthy, MLA of Jayanagar Constituency; Guruprasad S, Vice President at OpenText India; actor Daali Dhananjay; and Dr Mahantesh G. K., Founder Trustee of Samarthanam. C. K. Ramamurthy stressed the importance of accessible healthcare for the disabled, while Manoj Nagpal of OpenText highlighted the company’s commitment to advancing health equity.

Actor Daali Dhananjay, the event’s brand ambassador, spoke passionately about the power of inclusion and the right to healthcare for all, regardless of circumstances. Dr Mahantesh G. K., emphasising Samarthanam’s dedication to accessible healthcare, noted that the Walkathon was a reminder of the need for proactive health measures and the importance of staying active.
