Chennai: Australian winger Ryan Williams showcased his value to a team brimming with attacking talent, leading Bengaluru FC to a thrilling 4-2 victory over neighbors Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League on Saturday. BFC coach Gerard Zaragoza couldn’t have asked for a better end to the year, as his side opened the scoring through Williams’ early strike.
However, despite the promising start, BFC entered halftime on level terms after Chennaiyin’s Irfan Yadwad and Lalrinliana Hnamte found the back of the net. The Marina Machans maintained relentless pressure in the second half, forcing mistakes from Bengaluru FC’s defenders. This high-press strategy, however, left their backline exposed, providing BFC with ample space to counterattack. Taking advantage of the openings, the Blues regained momentum through the efforts of Pereyra Diaz, Noguera, and Williams.
Their persistence paid off when Williams capitalized on a chance in the penalty area, calmly slotting the ball home to restore Bengaluru’s lead. The game was sealed in the 82nd minute when a cross from Williams deflected off Chennaiyin defender Laldinliana Renthlei and into his own net, securing a two-goal cushion for BFC. With this victory, Bengaluru FC closed 2024 in second place in the league standings with 27 points.
