Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that Congress were the political descendants of Mahatma Gandhi while the BJP traced their ideological origins to Nathuram Godse. Godse had famously assassinated Gandhi. The CM made the comments during a meeting at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) meeting in Bengaluru on Monday. The meeting discussed the preparations for the “Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Saviddhan” (Victory to Gandhi, Ambedkar and the Constitution) programme slated for January 21 in Belagavi.
“We have to explain the struggles of Ambedkar, Gandhi and Nehru to the next generations. We (Congress) are the descendants of Gandhi and they (BJP) are the descendants of Godse. We should explain these ideological differences to today’s youth,” Siddaramaiah said. The “Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Saviddhan” programme was supposed to be held on December 27 in Belagavi after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting was held a day prior in the city.
December 26 marked the centenary celebrations of Gandhi presiding over an All India Congress Committee (AICC) session in Belagavi in 1924. The public meeting was scheduled for December 27 but it was postponed indefinitely after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died on December 26. Meanwhile, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar called upon Congress workers to show in great numbers for the January 21 convention, adding that at least 100 people should turn up from each of the 224 Assembly constituencies in Karnataka.
