Bengaluru: Bengaluru is expected to experience cooler weather from January 17 to 19, with minimum temperatures predicted to range between 15°C and 16°C. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a minimum temperature of 14.3°C on Friday, signalling a return to the city's characteristic chilly mornings. The cooler spell follows a brief period of warm weather earlier this week, attributed to cloudy skies during the Makar Sankranti festival. The minimum temperature hovered around 19-20°C at the start of the week but has since dropped, reaching 14.5°C on Thursday. Over the next five days, the IMD predicts a further dip of 2-3°C in the minimum temperature across interior Karnataka. Dr. K. S. Harshith, Consultant Internal Medicine at Aster RV Hospital, shared insights on staying safe and healthy during colder weather.

"When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue, and dispose of it immediately. Washing hands frequently with soap and water, avoiding touching your face, and maintaining distance from sick individuals are effective preventive measures," he said. He also stressed the importance of staying home if unwell to avoid spreading illnesses. To manage cold symptoms, Dr. Harshith advised, "Use a humidifier, rest well, and stay hydrated. Gargling with salt water and using over-the-counter remedies can also help alleviate discomfort." While medical care is essential for managing cold-related allergies, several home remedies can provide relief and boost overall health: Dr Harshith emphasised several effective home remedies for managing cold-related allergies and boosting overall health. He suggested taking warm baths to temporarily alleviate symptoms and soothe itchy or irritated skin.

Applying mild, fragrance-free moisturisers can help hydrate and protect the skin, reducing dryness and irritation. Herbal teas were highlighted for their ability to promote relaxation and reduce inflammation. "Raw, unprocessed honey has antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce allergy symptoms," he explained.

Additionally, increasing the intake of vitamin C-rich foods like citrus fruits can strengthen the immune system and reduce the severity of future allergic reactions. With temperatures set to dip further, Bengaluru’s residents are embracing the chill while taking necessary precautions to stay healthy during the season.
