Sanitary pads available in autos: Kshema initiative launched
NT Correspondent
Bengaluru: In a new initiative called Kshema, sanitary pads are now being made available in autorickshaws in Bengaluru. Launched by Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and supported by Sakriya Charitable Trust, the program aims to improve access to menstrual health products in public spaces as per reports. The initiative began with around 10 autorickshaw drivers, including Azzu Sulthan, known for his Auto Kannadiga service, who have installed sanitary pad vending machines in their vehicles.
The trust plans to extend this service to more autorickshaws, especially those driven by women. Minister Reddy described the initiative as the first of its kind in India. He said, “These dispensers have been installed to help women in need. We are ready to support other companies or organisations that wish to expand this initiative as part of their CSR programs.” The initiative has received positive feedback, with many on social media supporting the idea of normalising menstruation-related discussions.
Women have expressed how convenient it is to have sanitary pads readily available in public spaces. Some have also expressed hope that the service will eventually be extended to government buses and metro stations. This initiative could play a significant role in changing how menstruation is viewed and addressed in public spaces.
