Belagavi: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that freedom fighters alongside legislators from the state would be invited to the unveiling of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belagavi on January 21. The programme was scheduled for December 27 but it was postponed indefinitely after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died on December 26. Shivakumar made the comments in Belagavi on Saturday.

“Invitations have been extended to all MLAs of all parties and freedom fighters for the unveiling of the Gandhi statue. This responsibility should be handled by the Deputy Commissioners,” Shivakumar said. The “Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Saviddhan” (Victory to Gandhi, Ambedkar and the Constitution) programme has also been slated for January 21 in Belagavi.

“The Jai Bapu-Jai Bhim- Jai Samvidhan is a convention to send out a big message from Belagavi. Gandhiji's history is Congress' history and Congress' history is the nation's history. All sections of the society get representation when all sections of the society come to power. We are following the footsteps of Mahatma,” Shivakumar said.
