Karnataka implements new learning strategies to boost SSLC exam results

Bengaluru: With Karnataka’s SSLC examinations for Class 10 students set from March 21 to April 4, the state government has introduced structured learning initiatives to boost student performance and overall success rates. This follows last year’s disappointing pass percentage. Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa announced that the department is implementing innovative study models, additional coaching, and technology-driven monitoring to ensure better results while maintaining exam integrity.

“I am optimistic about SSLC results given the strategic academic measures introduced this year. Some districts are excelling, while others need improvement, but I am confident of an overall increase in success rates,” Bangarappa stated. To aid preparation, districts have adopted unique strategies. The ‘One Day, One Mark’ programme encourages students to study one question daily for systematic learning. This has been implemented in Yadgir and is expected to expand to other districts. A ‘buddy learning system’ pairs underperforming students with high scorers to promote collaborative learning. Additionally, teachers will personally call students early in the morning to encourage timely study sessions.

Remedial classes are also being conducted for students struggling with key subjects as per reports. In an unusual move, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in some districts have taken on teaching roles to motivate students and educators. Trial exams have been conducted, and strict monitoring is ensured via webcasting. Despite academic support, Bangarappa confirmed that no grace marks will be awarded this year. Last year, the state granted 10% grace marks due to a sharp drop in pass rates from stricter invigilation. However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ruled out this provision for the current year. Minimal grace marks for students narrowly missing the pass mark will be discussed further. The webcasting system, introduced last year, will continue to monitor all SSLC exam centres.

“Webcasting ensures fairness and helps evaluate students’ learning levels. It will be mandatory,” Bangarappa emphasised. Regarding the hijab’s allowance during exams, Bangarappa stated that the matter is still in court, and a final decision will follow consultations with the Home Minister. To further assist students, the education department has released a study guide covering marking schemes, probable questions, memory techniques, a structured 24-hour study timetable, and health tips for balanced nutrition and sleep schedules.
