Data stolen from Kaveri 2.0 portal: IGR

Bengaluru: Fake accounts being created and data being stolen from the property registration portal “Cauvery 2.0” has prompted an FIR being filed by the Inspector General of Registration (IGR) K A Dayanand on Sunday. Last week, Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda had expressed regret over the website not working, leaving those wanting to register their properties and obtain a Encumbrance Certificate (EC) high and dry. Proceedings at sub-registrar offices across the state have also been disrupted.

Reports have now suggested that the hackers have not just nullified the website, but have made fake accounts and have stolen data. The Inspector General has now asked higher authorities to pursue legal action against the hackers. The Cyber Crime wing of the Bengaluru City Police (BCP) have reportedly confirmed that an FIR has been filed, and an investigation is underway to track down the perpetrators and assess the extent of the data breach.

This has put light on the shrill security of government portals, where important documents of individuals are being uploaded. At a time where one doesn't have to wait for a click to steal data, the lack of a strong encryption of data poses a question mark over the credibility of switching important records to the digital mode.
