SG Palya’s growth pains: Waste woes, traffic chaos

NT Correspondent Bengaluru SG Palya, officially known as Suddagunte Palya, is a ward in Bengaluru that has witnessed rapid urbanisation in recent years. With an increasing number of commercial establishments and paying guest (PG) accommodations, the area faces several civic challenges that require urgent attention.

Waste management woes: One of the most pressing issues in SG Palya is improper waste disposal. The ward suffers from inadequate waste collection mechanisms, leading to overflowing garbage bins and littering. The surge in PG accommodations and commercial spaces has further exacerbated the problem, as waste generation has increased without a proportionate improvement in disposal infrastructure.

As a result, streets are often lined with unattended waste, causing health hazards and an unpleasant living environment. "The garbage collection is irregular, and we often see piles of waste accumulating for days," said Anjali Rao, a PG resident of SG Palya. "It not only attracts rodents but also poses serious health risks."

Traffic congestion and poor roads: Traffic congestion is another major concern for residents. The narrow roads in SG Palya struggle to accommodate the rising number of vehicles, especially during peak hours. Smaller streets, which were originally designed for minimal traffic, are now burdened with a mix of personal vehicles, two-wheelers, and commercial transport, leading to frequent traffic jams. Pedestrians also face difficulties navigating through congested areas, increasing the risk of accidents. Adding to the commuting woes, the condition of the roads in SG Palya is deteriorating.

Pothole-ridden streets not only hinder smooth vehicular movement but also pose a significant safety risk to both motorists and pedestrians. "The potholes are a nightmare. Every time it rains, they get worse, making it dangerous for two-wheeler riders," said local shop owner Justin Jose. The lack of proper street lighting further compounds the issue, making nighttime travel particularly hazardous. Insufficient lighting in several pockets of the ward increases the chances of accidents and raises security concerns for residents.

Water scarcity: Another growing challenge is water scarcity. With the increasing number of PG accommodations and commercial units, the demand for water has risen sharply. However, the supply has not kept pace, leading to frequent shortages. Many residents rely on private water tankers, which adds to their financial burden. "We have to buy water almost every week. The authorities need to come up with a long-term solution," said Menon, a resident.

The rapid commercial expansion of SG Palya has also led to noise pollution and encroachment on residential areas. Restaurants, cafes, and commercial outlets often operate late into the night, causing disturbances to residents. The strain on local resources, including water and sanitation, is another consequence of unregulated commercial growth.

Moreover, the encroachment of footpaths and public spaces by commercial establishments has restricted pedestrian movement and worsened the overall urban landscape. "We understand development is necessary, but there has to be a balance. Residential areas should not suffer because of unchecked commercial activities," said longtime resident Naveen Sharma.

Rising tensions between residents PG occupants: With the increasing number of PG accommodations in SG Palya, conflicts between long-term residents and temporary PG students or bachelors have become more frequent. Many residents feel that PG occupants do not adhere to community rules, particularly concerning waste disposal, noise levels at night and parking. "Many PG residents are unaware of waste segregation rules, and they tend to dump garbage irresponsibly," said Meena, a homeowner.

"This creates friction between us and them, as we end up bearing the consequences." On the other hand, PG students and bachelors argue that they often face unnecessary hostility from residents. "We are here for studies or work, and we try our best to adjust. But sometimes, we feel targeted just for being temporary residents," said, a PG occupant. Such confrontations highlight the need for better community engagement and awareness programs to ensure that both residents and PG occupants coexist harmoniously.

Call for action: Addressing these issues requires a coordinated effort from civic authorities, residents, and business owners. Regular garbage collection, road maintenance, improved water management, and stricter regulations on commercial expansion can help alleviate the problems faced by SG Palya.
