Avoid getting out in sun, hydrate constantly: Health Dept

Bengaluru: Amidst unusually high temperatures experienced in Bengaluru since February, the State Health Department has implemented measures to address the heat. The India Meteorological Department had forecasted similar weather patterns, but dismissed the possibility of an early onset of summer. In light of the rising heat waves combined with the typical summer warmth in the state, the Health Department has released guidelines for the public to adopt precautionary measures.
The summer of 2024 in the city has proven to be a sweltering one, exacerbated by a lack of rainfall. Given the atypical conditions observed at the end of February, this summer is anticipated to be equally challenging. However, experts predict that rainfall may occur during this period. The public is encouraged to stay hydrated even in the absence of thirst, as thirst can indicate dehydration. It is advisable to carry water during travel, along with oral rehydration solutions (ORS), buttermilk, and fruit juices. Fruits with high water content are beneficial in combating dehydration. A few of them are in the harvest season, and they make people feel fresh. Recommended options include watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, grapes, pineapple, cucumber, lettuce, and coconut water.
In addition to maintaining hydration, it is crucial to minimise sun exposure. It is recommended to avoid outdoor activities between 12 noon and 3 pm and to wear light-coloured, loose-fitting cotton clothing. The department also advises the routine practice of carrying an umbrella, hat, towel, or any other form of cover when venturing out into the sun.
