JP Nagar 7th Phase: South Bengaluru's serene gem offers a rough ride

As a leading residential hub in South Bengaluru, JP Nagar 7th Phase faces urgent calls to fix its crumbling infrastructure, from dangerous roads to open garbage sites

Bengaluru: Jaya Prakash (JP) Nagar 7th Phase (Under Ward 177 - JP Nagar) in South Bangalore is a peace- ful, well-connected residential area with excellent schools, hospitals, parks, malls, and metro access. It attracts families and professionals seeking a convenient yet serene lifestyle.

The locality includes vibrant neighborhoods like Nrupathunga Nagar, Silver Oak Layout, Amalodbhavi Nagar, Puttenahalli,, RBI Layout, Paradise Colony, and more. With a mix of apartments, villas, and independent homes, this area offers green spaces, strong infrastructure, and essential amenities, making it one of the most sought-after residential zones in Bangalore’s thriving southern region.

Unsafe roads, strained residents “Roads are the biggest issue,” said Geetha, highlighting the challenges faced by residents and commuters due to the poor condition of the roads. “They start digging for road work but never finish it,” she added, pointing out that the half-dug roads pose serious safety risks especially for senior citizens like herself.

The area is primarily made up of residential colonies with a significant elderly population. Yet, there are hardly any dedicated facilities or support systems in place for them. “It’s unfortunate that even basic infrastructure is lacking, making day-to-day life difficult for seniors,” she said. Several parts of JP Nagar 7th Phase suffer from poor street lighting, making it unsafe for residents to step out after dark.

The lack of illumination makes both walking and driving difficult and risky. “The road from Capitol School to Brigade Gardenia has no proper lighting. It’s very hard to walk there,” said a resident. Footpaths become no-go zones Another major issue is the near total disappearance of foot- paths, a longstanding problem in Bengaluru.

In a residential area like JP Nagar, footpaths are essential for pedestrian safety, yet they are either missing or unusable. Many footpaths are encroached upon by fruit and vegetable pushcart vendors, illegally parked vehicles, and unauthorized structures that extend right up to the road in violation of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) regulations.

Additionally, there are numerous spots where construction debris is dumped on the road and footpaths, which could cause accidents that could harm pedestrians and commuters on two-wheelers. “To make things worse, delivery riders often speed along whatever little footpath remains, trying to meet their deadlines.

It’s extremely dangerous for pedestrians,” said Geetha. The areas in this phase also suffer from the common issue of open garbage dump sites. One particularly concerning stretch near Puttenahalli Lake, possibly on private land, has become a major dumping ground in JP Nagar.

Various types of waste are regularly discarded at this spot, and it has also become a common place for public urination, worsening the unhygienic conditions. Addressing the pressing infrastructure and safety concerns in JP Nagar 7th Phase is essential for creating a secure and comfortable living environment.

“I hope the authorities take swift action to resolve these issues, for the betterment of our community and all who live here,” Geetha urged, emphasizing the urgent need for responsible and effective intervention.
