Pollution surge chokes Bengaluru air quality

Bengaluru: Air pollution levels in Karnataka’s capital have once again raised concern, with fresh data from the Pollution Control Board showing a significant drop in air quality across several parts of the city.

As per the Air Quality Index (AQI) monitors installed at key locations, Silk Board Junction has recorded an alarming AQI of 125, far exceeding the city’s average healthy limit of 63. Major areas like Majestic City Railway Station, Peenya, Kasturinagar, and Mailasandra are also reporting above-average AQI levels.

Environmental experts have warned that an AQI above 63 is unhealthy and can lead to respiratory illnesses. With Silk Board’s AQI nearly double the average, there is a growing fear of worsening health problems. Authorities have urged the State Pollution Control Board and the Environment Department to take immediate steps to tackle the pollution.

Citizens, too, are advised to take precautions, especially in heavily polluted zones. The concerning figures come at a time when Bengaluru is adding new electric buses to its fleet and encouraging greener public transport to help curb emissions.

However, environmentalists say more stringent measures are needed to improve air quality.
