Where convenience meets congestion

Thavarekere (or Tavarekere, under Ward 172) is a residential neighborhood located in South Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Blending charm and convenience, the area features a mix of long-established homes and modern developments.
The name "Thavarekere" translates to "lotus pond" in Kannada, hinting at its historical connection to a natural water body that once existed here.
Its strategic location makes it a desirable spot for residents seeking both comfort and connectivity.
The locality is equipped with a range of essential amenities, including schools, hospitals, retail stores, and eateries, meeting the everyday needs of the community
Given its proximity to key areas like Jayanagar, BTM Layout, and Bannerghatta, Thavarekere's roads are unavoidable and see significant commuter traffic daily.
This makes the locality highly accessible but also means residents and commuters often navigate busy stretches, especially during peak hours, as vehicles constantly flow through or towards these major hubs.

Crowding effect
While Tavarekere Main Road is relatively broad, it still suffers from considerable traffic congestion.
The presence of numerous commercial establishments, while convenient for residents, contributes to this issue.
Many vendors operate from pushcarts and auto-rickshaws stationed along the roads and footpaths, further narrowing the available space.
A resident remarked, “Their gas stoves are exposed in the open, posing a serious safety hazard despite being their means of livelihood,” adding that the way these businesses are set up is also leading to unhygienic conditions in the surrounding area.
Additionally, several shops encroach on pedestrian areas by placing banners, products, and other paraphernalia on footpaths, significantly obstructing pedestrian movement and reducing overall road usability.
As a result, pedestrians are often forced to walk on the roads due to blocked footpaths, creating hazardous conditions for both themselves and motorists.

Infrastructural strain
Thavarekere faces significant infrastructural strain. Many buildings in the area do not adhere to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) regulations, with numerous unauthorized Paying Guest (PG) accommodations and illegal constructions present.
The locality is densely populated, with a diverse mix of long-term residents, students from nearby educational institutions, and working professionals from various states.
However, the existing infrastructure is unable to keep up with the growing population and unregulated development, leading to further pressure on basic civic amenities.
“The main road gets waterlogged during heavy rains, making it extremely difficult to ride or even walk”, said Prajwal, a local resident, pointing to the poor condition of the roads and the absence of a proper stormwater drainage system.
Sharing similar concerns, a student resident remarked, “The arterial roads are too narrow and poorly maintained, making it a constant challenge for both vehicles and pedestrians to navigate safely”.
Sanitation and garbage disposal remain problematic in several parts of the area, though there are signs that authorities are making efforts to manage the situation.
Thavarekere’s rapid growth has outpaced its infrastructure, creating challenges for residents’ safety and comfort. Addressing these issues through better planning and stricter regulation is vital for the neighborhood’s sustainable future.
