Davanagere
The body of former corporator Sankol Chandrashekar was found burned beyond recognition inside a car in Davanagere’s 43rd Ward. Following the incident, two children reportedly attempted to end their lives in the aftermath of the tragedy. It is believed that family disputes and financial stress, particularly related to debts, played a significant role in the tragic events. Police suspect that three individuals may have taken their own lives.
Sankol Chandrashekar was known to have debts, and as their loan burden increased, creditors began visiting their home. This caused immense stress within the family. His children, Nareesh (20) and Pooja (23), who were deeply disturbed by the ongoing financial issues, had reportedly warned that things might escalate to the point of death. Their distress and threats reportedly deeply affected Chandrashekar.
On January 10, Chandrashekar left his home in a car, went to a nearby areca plantation on Naganooru Road, and poured petrol over the vehicle before setting it on fire, locking the doors. The car was engulfed in flames, and Chandrashekar was burned beyond recognition. His body was recovered from the heavily charred vehicle. He was a prominent figure, having contested the 2023 Legislative Assembly elections from Davanagere North as a BJP candidate and was popular for his public service.
Following the tragic incident, his children, severely distressed , consumed poison and were admitted to a private hospital for treatment. Both are in critical condition, battling for life. The family’s disputes, financial pressures, and emotional distress appear to have contributed to this heartbreaking tragedy. The entire community is in shock over the loss of the former leader, and investigations are ongoing.
